Extra Points:

  • Colorado State has possibly the toughest non-conference schedule in the nation. So far the results have not been good. They lost a heartbreaker 27-24 to Colorado at Boulder to start the season. Last week they were pasted by co-national champion USC 49-0 in Los Angeles.

  • Colorado State has won the Mountain West Conference title six times in the 11 years Sonny Lubeck has been coach. They have gone to six straight bowl games and nine in the last 11 years. Last year the Rams finished third in the Mountain West with a 4-3 record and a 7-6 record overall.

  • CSU`s field is named after Lubeck. The stadium has been expanded for this season with 4,400 seats added in the north end zone. This is expected to be the largest crowd ever for a CSU opener. The 2002 opener against Louisville drew the current record attendance of 31,607.

  • Glen Mason coached against the Rams` Lubeck once while at Kansas. The Jawhawks beat CSU 24-6 in 1993 which was Lubeck`s first year at Colorado State.

  • This will be the first time a Big Ten team plays a game in Hughes Stadium. The only other time the Rams have played a Big Ten team was in 1998 when they beat Michigan State 23-16.

  • The Gophers have never faced at team from the Moutain West Conference since it was started in 1999. They have played teams from that conference prior to 1999. Minnesota is 1-1 against San Diego State, 1-1 against Utah and 1-0 against Wyoming.

  • Minnesota will be looking for their 15th straight non-conference win, which includes bowl wins against Arkansas and Oregon, with a victory in this game. It would tie a team record set between 1944-1950. The most recent non-conference loss was at Toledo in 2001. Mason is 24-6 (.800) in non-conference games and 5-2 in non-conference road games as head coach for Minnesota. The two losses were the `01 Toledo game and the 1997 Hawaii game which was Mason`s first as the Minnesota coach.
